Lady Matilda became a ghost at the time of Queen Elizabeth - about 1589. She was accused of witchcraft but all she really liked to do was make potions - you know the sort of thing, potions to become invisible, turn someone into a frog or turn them bright green and hiccuping blue sparks - all harmless fun really. One of her potions went wrong when she tried it - and that's how she wound up a ghost.
